Sege: One female passenger has died, while eight others sustained various degrees of injuries in a road crash at the Matsekorpe Junction on the Sege-Kasseh stretch of the Tema-Aflao Highway. The crash, which involved three vehicles, occurred at approximately 14:30 hours on Tuesday and included two Opel Astra taxis and a Toyota Corolla.
According to Ghana News Agency, two of the injured individuals were in critical condition at the Sege Polyclinic. Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred when the Toyota Corolla, with registration number GN 5838-20, attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with an Opel Astra A, registration number GE 1269-13. A second Opel Astra A, registration number AS 9643-13, subsequently crashed into the first taxi, resulting in damages to all three vehicles.
Mr. Ofori Apronti, the Assembly Member for the area, highlighted that some taxis operating on the route were often overloaded, potentially impacting drivers' ability to maneuver during emergencies. He urged commercial drivers to exercise caution and adhere to road safety practices to reduce accidents. Mr. Apronti noted that the driver of one of the Opel taxis was among those critically injured, while six others were receiving treatment at the Sege Polyclinic.
Reverend Sampson Agbemabiase, the Head Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church in Sege, witnessed the incident and alleged that the Toyota Corolla's driver was speeding and overtaking dangerously. "My car could have been involved if I had not swerved the Corolla. The driver was speeding and overtaking recklessly," he remarked. Rev. Agbemabiase also expressed concern about the response to the crash and urged for prompt action by emergency responders at accident scenes to save lives.
The Ghana News Agency observed that personnel from the Sege District Police Command were present at the scene to assist with traffic management and alleviate congestion caused by the crash.
