Accra: The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has urged nurses to deepen their commitment to generosity, mentorship, and collaboration to empower women and strengthen healthcare delivery. Professor Margaret Gyapong, a Medical Anthropologist at UHAS, made this call at an event organized by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to commemorate the 2026 International Women's Day in Accra.
According to Ghana Web, the event was held under the theme: 'Give to Gain: The Role of Giving in Fostering Gender Equality Leading to Collective Advancement - Where Women Thrive, We All Rise.' Prof Gyapong drew inspiration from the biblical description of a virtuous woman, highlighting her as a model of noble character who works diligently, speaks with wisdom, and extends generosity to everyone in society.
Prof Gyapong emphasized that such examples are not meant to create guilt or unrealistic expectations for women but to highlight a value-driven life where individuals use their gifts to serve others. She challenged nurses and other professionals to reflect on the theme of giving and gaining, emphasizing the importance of generosity, support, and collaboration to empower women and nurses specifically.
She acknowledged that nurses sometimes face negative public perceptions due to the actions of a few but stressed their indispensable role in the healthcare system. Nurses play a critical role in promoting women's health and safeguarding their rights, often helping to break barriers and ensure equitable care.
Prof Gyapong also recognized the personal sacrifices many nurses make in pursuit of professional advancement and questioned how they use their positions to support others. She highlighted the contributions of distinguished nursing professionals who have helped advance the profession and foster gender equality.
With the GRNMA boasting over 120,000 members, Prof Gyapong encouraged nurses to protect and glorify the nursing profession and continue advocating for women's health and rights. She also called on professionals to promote gender equality through acts of generosity, underscoring the power of reciprocity and mutual support.
Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, President of the GRNMA, urged women to seize leadership opportunities and actively contribute to advancing gender equality. Mr. Daniel Osei Tuffour, Founder of the YAWC Network, emphasized the importance of informed decisions in choosing mentors for career and personal development.
International Women's Day, marked annually on March 8, celebrates the achievements of women and calls for accelerated gender equality.
