Accra: The reigning champions of the National Science and Maths Quiz, Mfantsipim School, has secured the first seat at the grand finale of the competition, demonstrating their resolve to defend their title this year.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mfantsipim School achieved a decisive victory with 42 points against Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) and Mankranso SHS, who scored 23 and 15 points respectively, in the first semi-finals contest. The competition began slowly for all three schools, much to the disappointment of the quiz mistress, Prof Elsie Effah Kaufmann.
In the first round, Mfantsipim School took a significant lead with 17 points, while GSTS and Mankranso SHS trailed behind with seven and six points, respectively. The second round saw minimal changes as Mankranso SHS lost a point, GSTS gained five points, and Mfantsipim added just a single point during the speed race.
The third round, known as the ‘problem of the day,’ posed a challenge for the participants, with Mfantsipim and GSTS eac
h earning one point, and Mankranso scoring zero. Despite the pressure from GSTS, Mfantsipim School maintained their lead.
In the fourth round, Mfantsipim extended their lead to 32 points, while GSTS and Mankranso SHS scored 20 and 15 points, respectively. The final round saw Mfantsipim School answering three out of four riddles correctly, securing their place in the grand finale and a chance to defend their title.
