Ashanti: The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has intensified road safety sensitisation and enforcement activities along major highways in the Ashanti Region. This initiative aims to promote responsible road use and ensure an accident-free Easter.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise took place at strategic locations, including Yawkwei on the Accra-Kumasi Highway and Akumadan on the Kumasi-Techiman stretch. These efforts are part of managing the expected increase in vehicular movement during the festive period. Mr. Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, Ashanti Regional Head of the NRSA, stated that the initiative focuses on educating drivers and passengers while enforcing compliance with road traffic regulations to reduce crashes.
Excessive speeding remains a major concern along these highways. Mr. Boateng emphasized that the intensified presence of enforcement teams is intended to deter such behavior. 'We are witnessing a lot of speeding along these stretches, and this exercise is to ensure that drivers comply with speed limits and prioritise safety,' he noted.
The NRSA is collaborating with stakeholders such as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to inspect vehicles and enforce regulations. Mr. Boateng highlighted the widespread use of unapproved lighting systems among commercial and heavy-duty vehicles as a key violation. 'These illegal lights, especially when used at night, posed a serious danger to other road users. We are removing them and educating drivers on the need to use only approved lighting systems,' he stated.
The misuse of private vehicles for commercial purposes was also addressed, as it undermines regulatory requirements like proper registration, licensing, and insurance. Additionally, issues such as poor tyre conditions, inappropriate licences, and general disregard for road safety rules were identified as recurring offences.
Motorcycle riders are also part of this initiative, with the NRSA observing continued non-compliance with helmet regulations despite ongoing education campaigns. Mr. Boateng stressed that the goal is to ensure the safety of all road users, including drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. He urged the public to act responsibly and adhere to road traffic regulations.
'We want everyone to be safe and enjoy an accident-free Easter, not only in the Ashanti Region but across the country. All road users must play their part by complying with the rules,' he said. The NRSA indicated that these intensified enforcement and sensitisation activities would continue throughout the Easter period to sustain compliance and minimise road traffic crashes.
