Sanaa:Mavis Hawa Koomson, the National Women's Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), announced that the party plans to establish a formal agreement with NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. This agreement aims to ensure that more women benefit from government appointments if the party wins the 2028 elections.
According to Ghana Web, Hawa Koomson emphasized that unlike the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) alleged verbal assurances regarding women's appointments, the NPP intends to secure a binding commitment from Bawumia. She stated that the NDC had made promises without binding documents, whereas the NPP will formalize their agreement with Dr. Bawumia.
She also mentioned that Bawumia has already pledged to allocate 10 appointments in every constituency if elected president in 2028. The NPP will seek clarification on how many of these appointments will be designated for women and will ensure that this commitment is fulfilled. Ensuring that women have a meaningful voice in government will remain a priority for the party.
Hawa Koomson expressed her disappointment over the recent failure of two women candidates in the NPP's national executive elections. She had hoped at least one would join her in the party's national leadership, as she believes women perform well in leadership roles. Despite this setback, she is optimistic that the party's leadership is creating opportunities for more women to serve in key positions.
