Accra: There will be a signing of a Peace Pact among the five Presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Thursday, January 22, 2026, in Accra. The ceremony would be facilitated by the Presidential Elections Committee, chaired by Mr. Joseph Osei Owusu, former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and ex-Member of Parliament for Bekwai.
According to Ghana News Agency, the signing of the peace pact would mark a significant milestone in the Party's preparations for the flagbearer contest on Saturday, January 31, 2026. The Memorandum of Understanding is intended to ensure that the primaries are conducted in a peaceful, transparent, and disciplined manner.
The five aspirants expected to append their signatures to the pact are: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, economist, and former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana; Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, businessman, and media entrepreneur; and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Food and Agriculture with a military background in the U.S. Air Force.
The rest are Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education and advocate for STEM reforms in Ghana's education system, and Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former General Secretary of the NPP and long-serving party stalwart. Mr. Osei Owusu, in a recent media interview, underscored the importance of the pact, stressing that the Committee's mandate was to deliver a free, fair, and transparent primary.
'This pact is our collective assurance to the Ghanaian people that the process will be peaceful and credible,' he assured. The signing ceremony is expected to reassure party members, delegates, and the wider public of the NPP's commitment to unity and democratic principles. It also signals the aspirants' willingness to put the Party's cohesion above personal ambition as they prepare for the January 31 contest.
The peace pact is a crucial step in safeguarding the integrity of the primaries and ensuring that the NPP emerges from the process stronger and united ahead of the 2028 general elections.
