Northern Regional EC Director Awaits Guidelines for Kpandai By-Election

Tamale: The Northern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Lucas Yiryel, has stated that the Commission has not yet issued definitive guidelines regarding the rerun of the Kpandai Constituency election. This rerun was mandated by a recent ruling from a Tamale High Court.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Yiryel, in an interview, expressed that he could not provide authoritative details about the potential by-election. He emphasized the Commission's current position, noting that clear directives are still forthcoming. Mr. Yiryel assured that once the Commission is prepared for the by-election, as ordered by the court, the public will be duly informed.

The High Court in Tamale, on Monday, nullified the results of the December 2024 parliamentary elections for the Kpandai Constituency, citing irregularities, and ordered a rerun within 30 days. The court's decision followed a petition filed by Mr. Daniel Nsala Wakpal, the 2024 parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress in Kpandai. Mr. Wakpal contested the declaration of Mr. Matthew Nyindam as the Member of Parliament-elect. Despite the ongoing court case, Mr. Nyindam had been sworn in as the MP for the area.

The annulled election results had shown Mr. Nyindam leading with 27,947 votes, accounting for 53.47% of the total, while Mr. Wakpal received 24,213 votes, representing 46.33%.
