Northern Ghana Development Initiatives Gain Momentum: A New Era of Collaboration, Progress

Accra: A comprehensive development plan for Northern Ghana is taking shape, focusing on key areas such as agriculture, peacebuilding, healthcare, education, energy, and transport infrastructure. Stakeholders, including government officials, traditional leaders, and development partners, are coming together to drive progress and unlock the region's potential.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, emphasized the strategic initiative aimed at developing Northern Ghana's agricultural potential, aspiring to make it the country's breadbasket. His remarks were made on Tuesday in Parliament House during a stakeholder engagement with the Northern Caucus Members of Parliament. This Caucus includes 57 members from the five Northern Regions, united in setting aside political differences to collaboratively pursue regional development.

The initiative as outlined includes identifying 200,000 hectares of land for rice production, conducting study tours to Kenya and Vietnam, and engaging importers to secure market guarantees. Mr. Ayariga highlighted the use of simpler, cost-effective irrigation technologies and solar-powered pumps to reduce energy costs and enhance efficiency.

Peacebuilding is another key focus, with plans for a northern conference to facilitate dialogue between traditional and state rulers. Addressing underlying issues like land ownership and governance is seen as vital to preventing violent conflicts and promoting peace and stability in the region.

Madam Samurai Bhatia, Deputy Development Director at the British High Commission, praised the Caucus for its progress. She expressed her team's eagerness to collaborate further, sharing ideas and expertise to drive development. Development partners, she mentioned, are keenly aware of existing initiatives and are exploring opportunities for investment and partnership.

Madam Bhatia highlighted the strengthening of the education sector, health systems, public financial management, entrepreneurship, and skills building as potential collaboration areas. She reiterated the ultimate goal of unlocking Northern Ghana's potential, addressing challenges, and promoting economic growth and stability. The dialogue and potential collaborations aim to catalyze initiatives and ensure effective collaboration in Northern Ghana.
