Sanaa:Ernest Norgbey, Chairman of Parliament's Youth and Sports Committee, has called on politicians to allow Ghana's Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations concerning the country's World Cup visa arrangements.
According to Ghana Web, there is mounting political pressure following allegations of approximately US$623,000 being paid in visa facilitation fees related to travel arrangements for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Minority in Parliament has demanded the dismissal and prosecution of Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams and the Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority over their purported roles in the controversy. Norgbey, however, warned that political interference could compromise the investigation and impede security agencies from uncovering the truth.
He emphasized on Joy FM's Top Story that while politicians can engage in political discourse, it is crucial to allow the investigative agencies to carry out their duties without political influence. Norgbey urged that if an individual is alleged to have committed a crime, the investigative authorities should manage the situation independently.
Norgbey also advised against prematurely considering the allegations as facts, noting that public commentary could disrupt the CID's work. President John Mahama has already instructed NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah to step aside during the investigation. Meanwhile, Norgbey pointed out that Kofi Adams, unlike Ankrah, has not been summoned by the CID for questioning.
