Accra: The Ghana Police Service has refuted reports suggesting that arrests have been made in connection with the fire outbreak at the Accra Central Police Barracks on June 3.
According to Ghana News Agency, a press release issued by Superintendent of Police Ms. Juliana Obeng, Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, clarified that "no individuals had been arrested at this stage of the ongoing investigations." The statement aimed to correct initial media reports that inaccurately claimed arrests had been made.
The release emphasized, "Contrary to earlier reports in a section of the media suggesting that arrests have been made. no arrests have been made at this stage of investigations." It also provided updates on a fire officer injured during the incident, noting that the officer was receiving treatment at the Police Hospital and was in stable condition. Fortunately, no fatalities have been recorded, although the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
The Accra Regional Police Command commended the Ghana National Fire Service and all personnel involved in managing the situation and ensuring safety at the scene. The Command assured the public that further updates would be communicated as investigations progressed.
The fire incident occurred during a torrential downpour on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, affecting some police officers and their families residing at the barracks. Notably, this incident coincided with the 11th anniversary of the June 3, 2015, twin disaster, which involved a devastating fire and explosion at the GOIL Filling Station near Kwame Nkrumah Circle, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries.
On the same day this year, a separate incident was recorded at Adenta, where a building collapse claimed the life of a woman and left several others, including children, injured.
