Nkawie: Mr. Robert Addo, the Nkawie Circuit Court Judge, has issued a stern warning to tricycle (Pragya) riders, urging them to adhere to road traffic rules and regulations. He emphasized the importance of compliance, noting that violations could result in custodial sentences, not just monetary fines.
According to Ghana News Agency, the warning was delivered following the sentencing of three riders who collectively faced fines totaling GHS 1,500.00 for violating traffic regulations in Nkawie. Mr. Addo highlighted a common misconception among riders that they could simply pay fines and resume their activities, stressing that this mindset was flawed and could lead to more severe legal consequences.
The judge elaborated that custodial sentences are a legal possibility, underscoring the necessity for riders to follow operational rules to maintain their livelihoods and peace. The court case involved three individuals: Arafat Ali, fined GHS 300.00 for driving without number plates and facing a 30-day jail term if the fine is not paid. Samuel Awuni and Issahaku Fumpoli each received fines of GHS 600.00 for driving without licenses and insurance, with a combined potential jail sentence of 13 months if they default.
Police Inspector Kwaku Frimpong, who prosecuted the case, informed the court that the complainants were officers from the Nkawie Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service. On September 14, 2026, between 0830 and 0900 hours, while on patrol to maintain order in the Nkawie community, the officers stopped the three riders. Their offences were uncovered during routine inspections, leading to their subsequent arrest, processing, and court appearance.
