Accra: The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced the successful clearance of a backlog exceeding 640,000 Ghana Cards and a significant expansion of its service delivery infrastructure both within the country and internationally. This development marks a critical step in improving the efficiency and reach of the identity card issuance system.
According to Ghana Web, Executive Secretary Wisdom Kwaku Deku revealed that the backlog was addressed in 2025 through collaborative efforts with technical partners and the strategic distribution of blank cards to district offices. This initiative facilitated faster printing and distribution processes nationwide. Deku highlighted that these measures were part of a coordinated effort to ensure the continuity of services and restore efficiency following previous operational challenges.
During a press conference held on May 21, 2026, Deku detailed the Authority's progress, stating, "We supplied blank cards to district offices to clear the backlog of over 640,000 cards, which were successfully printed and distributed by September 2025."
Deku also mentioned the NIA's expansion efforts beyond domestic borders. The Authority is now operational in 11 Ghana Missions abroad, with plans to extend its services to additional countries, including Spain, the United Arab Emirates, China, South Korea, C´te d'Ivoire, and Nigeria. This expansion aims to enhance the accessibility of Ghana Cards for citizens residing outside the country, further strengthening the NIA's global presence.
