Koforidua: Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Augustine Asante Kusi, the New Juaben South Municipal Crime Officer, has issued a warning to the public regarding the operation of brothels, highlighting that such activities are considered an offence under Section 277 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to Ghana News Agency, ASP Kusi elaborated that a brothel is defined as an establishment where clients pay to engage in sexual activities with sex workers. He further stated that these operations contribute to organised crime, facilitate human trafficking, and lead to the exploitation of vulnerable women and girls.
ASP Kusi also mentioned the health and safety risks associated with brothels, including the increased spread of sexually transmitted infections such as HIV and the compromise of community safety. The New Juaben South Municipal Police Command has therefore intensified its intelligence-led operations to target and dismantle brothel activities within Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.
He cited a recent police operation that led to the arrest of 12 Nigerian women, among them a 15-year-old minor, at a suspected brothel allegedly operated by an individual named Omari Gyamfi. The suspects, along with the operator, are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations and will face charges upon the completion of the process.
