Accra: The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the suspension of its chairman for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Stephen Ofosu Agyare. The suspension comes after a complaint was filed by the Member of Parliament for the area, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor. The party's General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, conveyed the decision in a letter, highlighting that the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) resolved to suspend Agyare for five months following a meeting on July 21, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, the suspension was deemed necessary after a thorough review of the matter by the General Secretary's committee. The letter stated, "Having extensively deliberated on the matter, FEC found sufficient basis to invoke the provision of Article 48(4) and Article 48(6) of the party's Constitution. Accordingly, you are hereby suspended from your position as Constituency Chairman of Awutu Senya East Constituency for a period of five (5) months, effective immediately."
The General Secretary further stated that the case has been escalated to the national leadership for additional investigation and action. "FEC has further referred the matter to the National Disciplinary Committee for investigation and appropriate action in accordance with the Constitution of the Party. During the period of your suspension, you are required to refrain from performing any functions or exercising any authority as Constituency Chairman until the matter is finally determined or otherwise directed by the Party," the letter added.
Although the specific details of the complaint by MP Naa Koryoo have not been publicly disclosed, reports indicate a significant divide among the leadership of the NDC in the Awutu Senya East Constituency. These reports suggest that the division stems from a personal conflict between MP Naa Koryoo and Chairman Agyare.
An executive within the NDC, identified as the MP's spokesperson, recently spoke about the alleged feud, blaming it on a failed marriage proposal. The spokesperson claimed that Chairman Agyare had proposed to make MP Naa Koryoo his second wife, an offer she declined after initially agreeing to a related arrangement.
The spokesperson elaborated that Agyare alleged Naa Koryoo promised to marry him if he assisted her in becoming the NDC parliamentary candidate for the constituency in the 2020 election, a promise she did not fulfill. The spokesperson quoted Agyare saying, "It is the reason why I helped you to become an MP. So, if you knew you wouldn't marry me, why did you accept my help then?" In response, Naa Koryoo reportedly told Agyare that she assumed his help was purely for campaign purposes.
