Accra: The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly rejected proposals for the state to finance the internal elections of political parties. Rashid Tanko Computer, the NDC's Deputy Director of IT and Elections, expressed the party's stance during an interview on Eyewitness News, monitored by GhanaWeb on July 29, 2026. He emphasized that state resources should not be allocated to political party elections amidst more pressing national issues requiring urgent attention.
According to Ghana Web, Rashid Tanko Computer highlighted the government's need to prioritize critical areas such as managing the Accra floods, resolving educational challenges like the double-track system, and improving the health sector and road infrastructure. He questioned why taxpayer money should be diverted to support political parties, asserting that these entities should independently fund their internal processes.
Rashid Tanko Computer further insisted that political parties unable to organize and finance their own elections should cease operations. He criticized the notion of state involvement in such matters, stating, "If you're a party and you can't organise yourself, fold up. If they can't organise, then they should fold up."
His remarks follow a recent Supreme Court ruling, passed by a 5-2 majority, which determined that the delegate system used by political parties for electing presidential and parliamentary candidates contradicts democratic principles.
