Accra: The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially removed Umar Sanda Mohammed from its membership roll following his decision to contest as an independent candidate in the March 3, 2026, Ayawaso East by-election. During the party's final rally in the constituency on Sunday, March 1, 2026, the NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, disclosed the new development in the upcoming by-election and Sanda's removal from the party.
According to Ghana Web, the expulsion takes immediate effect, meaning Mohammed will no longer enjoy the rights and privileges associated with party membership. Johnson Asiedu Nketia emphasized the repercussions of Mohammed's decision, stating that it would take him about eight years before he can contest any position in the party. Even if he decides to return after the by-election, he would have to wait until 2032 to contest. Nketia expressed personal regret over the situation, saying, "I am really pained for him."
During his address, Asiedu Nketia also cautioned the NDC against internal wrangling, drawing on biblical teachings about salvation. He remarked that those who stray often ignore guidance and only regret their decisions later. He affirmed that while Umar Sanda remains a brother, he is no longer a part of the party.
The NDC had earlier clarified in a statement released on February 17, 2026, that Umar Sanda forfeited his membership by violating the party's constitution and its collective decision to field a duly endorsed candidate. Additionally, the party has prohibited him from using the NDC's name, logo, colours, symbols, or any other intellectual property in his campaign or related political activities.
