Fuu:North East Gonja The North East Gonja District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged women's groups to promote the rule of law, resist corruption, and demand accountability in their communities.
According to Ghana News Agency, the engagement, held at Fuu with support from the German Development Cooperation, was a follow-up campaign to strengthen the gains made during an earlier session. It aimed to empower women as active champions of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
A total of 52 women from various groups, including hairdressers, dressmakers, and market women, participated in this initiative. Madam Martha Bagbin, the North East Gonja District Director of NCCE, encouraged the women to stand against corruption and become agents of positive change.
Mr. Sulemana Fuseini from the School for Life in the district, who served as a resource person, interacted with the participants to evaluate the impact of the previous engagement. The women shared experiences of how they had been empowered to question and seek clarification on activities suspected to be corrupt.
They recounted instances where questioning payments demanded during antenatal and postnatal services led to refunds. The participants showed an increased awareness of corrupt practices, such as giving money or items to authority figures for services.
Mr. Fuseini urged the women to apply principles of the rule of law, resist corruption, and demand accountability from those in power. He encouraged them to promote ethical practices and influence others to uphold integrity and transparency within their communities.
Participants were also educated on legal protections and mechanisms for reporting corruption, and they were encouraged to act as peer educators and advocates for integrity, accountability, and the rule of law in their associations and communities.
