National Housing Fund Targets Investment in Ghana’s Housing Sector

Accra:The National Housing Fund (NHF) Limited has completed a rapid diagnostic assessment of Ghana's housing sector to guide the mobilisation of resources and investment into housing. This initiative aims to address the challenges within the sector and enhance housing finance strategies.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Prosper Hoetu, the Chief Executive Officer of the NHF, announced that a high-level summary of the assessment would be presented at the National Conference on Housing Finance in Accra. The conference, themed 'Adequate Housing for All Innovative Financing for Ghana's Housing Future,' focuses on expanding access to housing finance and overcoming supply constraints.

The assessment was conducted using the VIRAL Diagnostic Toolkit from Shelter Afrique Development Bank, in partnership with the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources. This toolkit evaluated various aspects of Ghana's housing ecosystem, including Vision, Institutions, Regulations, Actors, and Local Initiatives. Findings from the assessment will inform the development of a Country Housing and Urban Development Partnership Strategy, aiming to attract more investment into the sector.

During the conference, discussions will also cover green and climate-smart housing technologies, non-interest banking, and green financing for housing. Additionally, the NHF has developed a homebuyers' database, a platform providing real-time information on housing demand and supply, which will be showcased for stakeholder feedback.

Mr. Hoetu highlighted the importance of a housing finance system that accommodates the diverse circumstances of Ghanaians, offering various pathways to homeownership such as rent-to-own arrangements and social housing. The conference is expected to produce a Commitment Statement, outlining actions to strengthen housing finance and delivery.

The NHF remains committed to collaborating with government, financial institutions, development partners, and other stakeholders to develop a robust housing finance system, ensuring more Ghanaians have access to decent and affordable housing.
