Ahafo: Professor Yaw Ofosu-Kusi, the Board Chairman of the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), has pledged the Foundation's commitment to addressing the physical infrastructure deficits in the Ahafo South mine enclave. This initiative is part of the Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's (NGGL) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts in the region.
According to Ghana News Agency, NADeF is focused on meeting the development needs of local communities around the Newmont Ahafo North mine in the Tano North Municipality and Newmont Ahafo South mine in the Asutifi North District. Prof. Ofosu-Kusi made these remarks during the governing board's inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the Newmont Ahafo South Mine's area.
The board examined a total of 26 ongoing development projects distributed across several communities, including Wamahinso, Gyedu, Ntotroso, Kenyasi Number One, and Kenyasi Number Two. These projects encompass sectors like health, security, social centers, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). In addition, they evaluated renovation efforts and livestock farming support projects for local residents.
Prof. Ofosu-Kusi expressed satisfaction with the progress and assured the communities of continued efforts to improve their livelihoods. Notable projects include a two-storey six-unit classroom block at Wamahinso Roman Catholic Primary School and an 18-unit classroom block for Gyedu Technical Institute. Renovations are also underway at Ntotroso Methodist Basic School and Twereku Ampem SHS.
Additional infrastructure includes a two-unit KG block at St. Peters Primary School in Kenyasi Number Two, a lecture block at UMat's satellite campus, and landscaping at Wamahinso social and health centers. The board also reviewed the ongoing construction of a police station and a 16-seater toilet project at Gyedu.
Prof. Ofosu-Kusi emphasized that the projects aim to enhance security, health, and education, while also creating employment opportunities. Health initiatives are designed to improve emergency responsiveness and provide sustainable accommodation for health workers, thereby enhancing their working conditions.
