My mother was worried with my decision to play in Iraq – Shafiu Mumuni

Former AshantiGold SC midfielder, Shafiu Mumuni has revealed that his mother thought he would die after he joined Iraqi side Al-Kahraba FC.

The 27-year-old was part of Ghana’s home-based team that won the 2019 West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup moved to Al-Kahraba FC after parting leaving Tunisian topflight side US Monastir.

Speaking to Angel TV, Mumuni said his decision to move to Iraq frightened his mother, who thought he would die in the Asian country.

“When I told my mum I had a deal to play in Iraq, she got disturbed. She told me she doesn’t think she will see me alive again,” the former Black Galaxies captain said.

“I think she heard a lot about the war but Iraq is not scary as we hear in the news. I’ve enjoyed the few years of my stay.”

Mumuni emerged the top scorer of the WAFU tournament with four goals, including a hat-trick against the Ivory Coast in the semi-finals.

Mumuni received his first Black Stars call-up during the 2021 AFCON qualifiers against South Africa and São Tomé and Príncipe but hasn’t been invited since.
