Cape coast: Afriwave Telecom Ghana Limited has partnered with Smile4Ghana and the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association to provide free dental screening and treatment to residents of Cape Coast. The week-long outreach was held at Cape Coast Jubilee Park from May 11 to May 16, 2026, screening and treating a total of 1,005 individuals.
According to Ghana Web, the initiative was part of Afriwave Telecom's corporate social responsibility activities, which focus on education, sanitation, and health. Smile4Ghana, a UK-registered charity, aims to promote oral health by offering basic dental services free of charge, particularly in underserved communities in Ghana.
During the outreach event, Smile4Ghana and the MOBA 82-84 Year Group honored the late Francis Apiagyei Poku for his significant contributions to dentistry in Ghana and his role as the longest-serving Ebusuapanyin of the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association. Dr. Poku, before his passing, held several positions in the public health sector, including Senior Dental Surgeon at Ridge Hospital, now known as Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
Dr. Poku was also the founder of Poku Memorial Dental Clinic, recognized as a pioneering private dental practice in Ghana. His professional affiliations included the Ghana Medical Association, Ghana Dental Association, Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners, and the Commonwealth Dental Association, where he served as Acting Vice President.
Ernest Poku, receiving the recognition on behalf of the family, expressed their honor and pledged to uphold Dr. Poku's legacy. He announced that Poku Memorial Dental Clinic would annually support the Smile4Ghana outreach and encouraged dental professionals and students to follow Dr. Poku's dedication to the field.
