Accra: The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has launched an initiative to distribute 40,000 bags of fertiliser and five agricultural drones to farmers. This distribution is a part of the Feed Ghana Programme and aims to enhance crop production, fortify food security, and provide farmers with access to modern agricultural technologies during the current farming season.
According to Ghana News Agency, the announcement was made by Mr. Eric Opoku, Minister of Food and Agriculture, at a ceremony in Accra. He emphasized that the fertilisers are intended to support farmers during the major planting season in northern Ghana and the upcoming minor season in the southern regions. The ministry has already commenced the distribution process across agricultural constituencies nationwide, with the expectation that the exercise will be completed by Friday.
Mr. Opoku highlighted the central role of farmers in ensuring food security and the importance of agricultural transformation for the nation's economy. He explained that the distribution strategy involves channelling the 40,000 bags of fertiliser through the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) to reach farmers who might not have access to district-level distribution.
He described this approach as a deliberate effort to ensure fairness and inclusion, reinforcing the government's commitment to supporting all hardworking farmers. Mr. Douglas Annor, President of PFAG, expressed gratitude to the ministry, acknowledging the timely support that will aid in improving productivity, enhancing soil fertility, and adopting modern farming practices.
Mr. Annor assured that the fertilisers and drones would be distributed transparently and used appropriately. He also appealed for continued government investment in quality seeds, mechanisation, irrigation, extension services, and agricultural financing to further support smallholder farmers and boost agricultural productivity.
