Modern Coaches Must Be Flexible – Yaw Preko Reflects on Changing Football Culture

Accra: Former Medeama coach, Yaw Preko has opened up on the evolution of coaching in Ghana, contrasting the strict approach of past managers with the more player-friendly methods of today. In an interview on the GFA podcast, Preko revealed that coaching was never part of his original plans, but years in the dugout have reshaped his perspective on player management. According to Ghana Web, Preko recalled that in the past, coaches were akin to teachers, characterized by their strictness and the unapproachable nature that made it difficult for players to interact with them. He referenced his experience under the late John Deschenes, describing him as 'very strict' and difficult to approach during his early playing days. However, Preko believes the modern game demands a different approach. He emphasized the importance of flexibility, stating that sometimes breaking the ice is necessary for players to feel comfortable. Nonetheless, he asserted that when it comes time to work, players must understand the coach's authority. The Accra Great Olympics coach highlighted the importance of balancing discipline with approachability in today's football environment. He noted that while the relationship between players and coaches has become more relaxed, maintaining professionalism is crucial for success.
