Accra: The Minority Caucus in Parliament has urged the government to expedite ongoing construction on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, following a tragic accident at the Birimso Bridge that resulted in multiple fatalities.
According to Ghana Web, the Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, issued a statement on behalf of the Minority on August 4, 2026. The statement emphasized the critical need to address safety issues on the highway, which have been highlighted by the recent crash. The Minority expressed condolences to the victims' families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
The caucus described the accident, which reportedly claimed at least 15 lives, as a wake-up call for the government to prioritize road safety improvements on this vital route. They stressed that the nation should not accept such tragedies as inevitable and called for the completion of ongoing highway projects, including bypasses and other necessary works.
Despite the government's allocation of US$1.7 billion for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project, the Minority argued that approximately US$300 million could suffice to finish the current projects on the existing highway. They highlighted the importance of completing these works to save lives immediately, while the expressway remains a longer-term goal.
With the accident involving an STC bus, an articulated truck, and a sedan car, the Minority insisted that addressing the unfinished sections of the highway should be deemed a national emergency. They urged the government to treat these developments with urgency, given the ongoing risk of fatal crashes on this critical corridor.
