Asaman tamfoe: A mining pit collapsed at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region, trapping 11 illegal miners underground around 11 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026. The miners were reportedly working in the pit in search of gold when the structure caved in, leading to a catastrophic situation.
According to Ghana Web, two miners who were not inside the pit at the time of the collapse alerted the community, prompting immediate action. Residents quickly mobilized a rescue team and contacted the police and other emergency agencies. Rescuers worked tirelessly through the night, managing to retrieve the remains of seven miners from the debris.
Efforts at the scene revealed that five of the deceased miners were residents of Moseaso, while the remaining two were identified as residents of Asaman Tamfoe. The search continues for four miners who are still feared to be trapped underground.
Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), along with community volunteers, are actively assisting with the ongoing search and rescue operations. Updates on the identities of the deceased and the progress of the rescue efforts are expected as the situation develops.
