Accra: Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson has made allegations against the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) following the death of his mother, who was receiving treatment at the hospital.
According to Ghana Web, in a series of posts on X dated August 4, 2026, Blackson accused UGMC, reputed to be Ghana's premier medical facility, of frequently misdiagnosing his mother's illness. He expressed his frustrations about the prospect of seeking legal recourse, suggesting that the process would be futile and excessively prolonged.
Blackson claimed that the misdiagnoses were intentional, aimed at extracting money from him. He criticized the hospital for recommending costly treatments, implying that financial gain was prioritized over patient care.
The comedian further criticized the hospital staff, describing them as the worst in Ghana and accusing them of being primarily motivated by money. He lamented the plight of individuals in West Africa who, lacking financial resources, are unable to access necessary medical care.
Blackson recounted his regret over paying the hospital, speculating that if he had not, his mother might have been sent home and potentially survived. He accused UGMC of prioritizing financial gain over patient well-being, suggesting that their operational motto favored money over life.
Additionally, Blackson alleged that the hospital misrepresented his mother's condition, preventing her transfer to another facility. He also recounted an incident where a staff member solicited money when he was identifying his mother's remains.
