Sunyani: The Very Reverend Dr Solomon Bruce, the Superintendent of the Sunyani Wesley Methodist Cathedral, has called on Ghanaians to view the media not as adversaries but as crucial partners in the nation's development. He emphasized the importance of granting journalists the freedom to operate without hindrance, underlining the media's role in promoting national growth.
According to Ghana News Agency, Rev Dr Bruce stressed that press freedom is vital for the consolidation of Ghana's democracy. He highlighted the media's responsibility to ensure citizens' access to information, promote transparency and accountability, and expose societal wrongdoings. Speaking at the Bono Regional Celebration of the 2026 World Press Freedom Day in Sunyani, he reiterated the necessity of a free, ethical, and fearless media for accountability and public empowerment.
Rev Dr Bruce advised journalists to adhere to high ethical standards and prioritize accuracy, especially in the face of increasing information disorder and misinformation. He urged media professionals to verify facts thoroughly and remain committed to truth and public accountability amidst emerging challenges.
Mrs Regina Benneh Siaw, the Bono Regional Chairperson of the Ghana Journalists Association, echoed these sentiments in her welcoming address. She highlighted the media's role in shaping national peace through their storytelling choices and urged fair reporting on sensitive issues like chieftaincy disputes in the Bono Region. Mrs Siaw emphasized the 2026 World Press Freedom Day celebration as a call for the media to hold authorities accountable fearlessly.
