Mahama Urges Education Minister for Detailed Report on 2025 WASSCE Performance

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has tasked Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, to produce a comprehensive analysis report on the performance of candidates in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The call for analysis comes in response to concerns raised by the recently released results of the examination, which have garnered significant attention from the government, parents, and the public.

According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama highlighted the issue during his address at the launch of the Made-In-Ghana Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Box (STEMBox) for basic schools in Accra. The President emphasized the need for an in-depth examination of the examiner's report to understand the factors contributing to the unexpected results. He expressed concern over the stark performance differences between batches of students, despite consistent teaching resources and conditions.

President Mahama underscored the importance of foundational learning, pointing out that neglect in basic education and the lack of quality teachers at the foundational level could be contributing to the issue. He stated that the focus should be on ensuring that primary school students are proficient in reading, writing, and arithmetic, which serve as the foundation for further education.

He further stressed the importance of vigilance and strict invigilation in examinations, urging that students be well-prepared to tackle exams independently. The President called for quick reforms in the education system to ensure the provision of quality education.

In response, Mr Iddrisu mentioned that the Education Ministry is currently reviewing the examiner's report on the 2025 WASSCE. He assured that they would provide an adequate response as necessary, reaffirming the government's commitment to delivering quality education under President Mahama's leadership.
