Accra:Destiny Arena President John Dramani Mahama has called on African nations to capitalize on the rising global demand for critical minerals by investing in local processing and manufacturing industries. He emphasized that this shift could significantly boost their economies.
According to Ghana Web, President Mahama made these remarks during the opening of the 2026 Mining in Motion Conference. He stressed the importance of moving away from merely exporting raw minerals and instead focusing on adding value to natural resources. This strategy aims to create jobs, strengthen industries, and increase Africa's share in the global market.
President Mahama also highlighted the importance of African countries taking greater ownership of their mineral resources to drive industrial development. He pointed out that the transition to cleaner energy has intensified the demand for critical minerals, presenting a unique opportunity for Africa to enhance its manufacturing sector through improved skills, technology, and supply networks.
In his speech, President Mahama noted Ghana's efforts to strengthen local value addition, specifically through initiatives like the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) and the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC). These organizations are focused on using Ghana's bauxite and iron ore resources to develop integrated aluminium and steel industries, respectively.
He emphasized that developing local processing facilities and manufacturing industries is crucial for African countries to retain more value from their natural resources. Investing in skills, technology, and reliable supply networks is vital to support Africa’s industrial ambitions and secure a stronger position in global supply chains.
