Accra: The Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, has labeled President John Dramani Mahama as the "principal beneficiary of free speech" in Ghana. Asante claims that Mahama extensively used his right to criticize the previous administration during his time in opposition.
According to Ghana Web, Asante, speaking on Good Afternoon Ghana on Metro TV, alleged that Mahama made numerous public criticisms of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He also encouraged members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to voice their dissent against the then-government.
Asante further claimed that the current administration has altered its approach since assuming office by arresting individuals who criticize the government. He emphasized that such actions compromise Ghanaians' fundamental rights, highlighting the necessity for citizens to freely express their opinions and hold the government accountable when necessary.
These remarks were made in context with the NPP's planned peaceful demonstration on August 6, which the party has confirmed will proceed despite the government's memorial ceremony for victims of a recent military helicopter crash. The NPP asserts that the demonstration aims to uphold democratic freedoms, specifically the right to free expression and peaceful assembly.
