Mahama Reiterates Commitment to Transform Ghana’s Transport and Logistics System

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to developing an efficient, safe, and inclusive transport and logistics system in Ghana. In his address at the opening of the inaugural Ghana Transport and Logistics Fair 2025, President Mahama emphasized the modernization of Ghana’s rail, road, maritime, and aviation systems, alongside improved intermodal connectivity to facilitate seamless passenger and freight movement across the nation and beyond.

According to Ghana News Agency, the three-day event, organized by the Ministry of Transport under the theme ‘Resetting Ghana’s Transport Sector for Improved Connectivity, Innovation, and Investment,’ aims to showcase innovation, attract investment, and foster collaboration to redefine the sector. President Mahama highlighted the government’s efforts to decarbonize transport, expand electric mobility infrastructure, and promote climate-smart investments to reduce emissions and protect the environment.

The Government is also working on establishing a robust regulatory framework for the safe operation of motorcycles and tricycles, commonly known as Okada, for passenger services, while expanding affordable mass public transport systems. President Mahama stated that the fair marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s national journey, serving as a platform for exhibition, networking, dialogue, innovation, and partnership between the public and private sectors.

He noted that the Ghana Transport and Logistics Fair aligns with the broader goal of positioning Ghana as a transport and logistics hub in West Africa, leveraging opportunities from the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement. Enhanced port efficiency, modern rail connectivity, expanded airport infrastructure, efficient road transport, and digital logistics systems are expected to establish Ghana as a gateway for trade and movement of goods in the region.

President Mahama praised Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Transport Minister, and his team for their efforts in turning this vision into reality. He announced recent investments in the transport sector, including the dualization of the Cape Coast-Takoradi Road and other segments, which are expected to reduce travel time by 50 percent.

The President reiterated that the event is a bold statement of intent to reset and transform Ghana’s transport and logistics system, focusing on modernity, innovation, safety, and sustainability. He stressed that transport is crucial for economic opportunities, market access, productivity, and inclusive national development. The fair, he said, is timely and informative, highlighting the administration’s commitment to building a safe, accessible, and technology-driven transport system that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
