Mahama Ayariga Declines to Comment on Bawku Chieftaincy Dispute

Accra: Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, has declared that he will not allow himself to be provoked into commenting on the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy dispute. As the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mr Ayariga emphasized his deliberate decision to abstain from making public statements on the matter, in order to prevent escalating tensions. This comes at a time when the Mediation Team, led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is actively working with key stakeholders to resolve the conflict. According to Ghana News Agency, during the closing ceremony of the Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament, Mr Ayariga highlighted that his silence was a strategic choice aimed at preserving peace in the region. He noted that he had been absent from his constituency for valid reasons, stressing that any hasty remarks could inflame passions or exacerbate the situation. Mr Ayariga reiterated his dedication to ensuring that parliamentary activities remain c entered on national development, while sensitive local issues like the Bawku chieftaincy dispute are addressed through appropriate mediation channels. The Mediation Team's decision confirmed Asigri Abugurago Azoka II as the rightful Bawku Naba, while recommending that rival chief Seidu Abagre be recalled to Nalerigu for a different traditional role. They also urged the government to support the enforcement of peace. However, the Mamprugu Overlord, known as Nayiri, has rejected the mediation report, whereas the Ghanaian government has officially accepted it as a roadmap for reconciliation.
