Kumasi: Veteran Kumawood actress Mavis Yeboah, popularly known as Maame Gyanwaa, has revealed that she has lost sight in one eye and now incurs a monthly expense of approximately GHS6,000 on medication to preserve the vision in her remaining eye.
According to Ghana Web, the actress shared her emotional story during an interview on UCook with Empress Gifty, aired on July 26, 2026. Maame Gyanwaa recounted how her eyesight deteriorated following what she initially thought was malaria, which led to a series of events culminating in partial vision loss.
Maame Gyanwaa explained that her ordeal began with severe chills after a rainfall, which she initially attributed to the cold weather. However, when her condition worsened by the next morning, she decided to seek medical attention. After medical tests, doctors diagnosed her with malaria and prescribed a series of three injections.
She described how her vision began to dim following the third injection, despite assurances from the nurse that the issue was temporary and possibly related to not having eaten. Despite these reassurances, her vision remained distorted when she returned home.
Upon visiting an eye clinic, Maame Gyanwaa was informed that there was pressure on her eyes and given medication, which, instead of improving her condition, seemed to worsen it. This prompted her to seek further treatment at various facilities, including Emmanuel Eye Clinic, St. Thomas Eye Hospital, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, each presenting new challenges and referrals.
Due to the unavailability of specialists and the high costs at these facilities, she eventually sought treatment at Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. There, doctors administered an injection directly into her eye and shifted focus to saving her remaining eye, as the other had already been severely damaged.
Maame Gyanwaa detailed the financial burden of her treatment, with medication alone costing GHS5,105, and additional fees for each treatment session and transportation. The actress now faces the ongoing challenge of preserving her remaining vision amidst these mounting expenses.
