Accra:Liberia's Vice President, Jeremiah Kpan Koung, has urged African countries to transform their mineral wealth into jobs and stronger industries to improve living conditions across the continent.
According to Ghana Web, Vice President Koung emphasized these points at the Mining in Motion 2026 Summit, highlighting the need for Africa to benefit more significantly from its natural resources by processing minerals locally. He pointed out that Africa has long been exporting raw and partially processed minerals, which results in most of the employment and commercial value being realized outside the continent.
Koung stated that the growing global demand for minerals used in energy systems, digital technology, and manufacturing presents a unique opportunity for Africa to develop industries and create jobs. He advocated for protecting mining communities and investing in the necessary infrastructure to support competitive businesses.
He outlined his priorities, calling for the development of mineral value chains supported by reliable electricity, efficient transport systems, modern ports, skilled workers, and market access. Koung also highlighted that the increasing demand for minerals could drive investment in power and transport infrastructure, benefiting households, local businesses, and other productive sectors.
Furthermore, he called for stronger connections between mining, agriculture, manufacturing, skills development, and technology, using the African Mining Vision as a framework. Koung concluded by stressing the importance of translating this vision into implementable and measurable outcomes.
