TAKORADI: The Local Accountability Network of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has taken a significant step in educating first-time voters at the Takoradi Technical Institute about the importance of voting based on issues rather than succumbing to monetary and other inducements offered by political parties. The initiative aims to encourage a culture of integrity and issue-based voting among young voters. According to Ghana News Agency, the practice of giving and receiving money and goods like fridges, pans, televisions, and food items has become a common tactic used by political parties to secure votes in Ghana, overshadowing the need for investments in the socio-economic development of the citizens. Mr. Justice Ennin, the Western Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), addressed the students, emphasizing the need to transform the current political narrative in Ghana. Mr. Ennin advised the students not to accept money as first-time voters and urged them to help cha nge these narratives. He stated, "Ghana is not poor, but corrupt practices are our bane to infrastructure and economic development." He further highlighted the illegality of underage voting and encouraged adherence to all electoral regulations to ensure integrity during elections. Madam Esther Nyantakyi, representing the market women on LANeT, expressed concern that Ghanaians have historically encouraged political corruption by demanding and accepting gifts from politicians. She urged the new generation to remain vigilant about the country's future and to contribute positively to its development. Madam Mercy Quarhsie, another member of LANeT, called on students to resist, reject, and report corruption to help protect the country's dwindling resources. Mr. Ebo Barker, LANeT's Focal Person, expressed gratitude to partners in the UK, the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, and the Ghana Transparency Initiative for their support of the project.
