Takoradi: Mr Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, has called on Ghanaians to draw inspiration from the events of the June 4, 1979 uprising, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the ideals of probity and accountability to foster a prosperous nation for everyone.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Nelson highlighted that the June 4 Uprising remains a significant historical event, serving as a reminder of the crucial role that integrity, patriotism, discipline, probity, accountability, and dedicated public service play in advancing Ghana's development agenda. This statement was made during a durbar organized by the Takoradi Branch of the Young Revolutionary Cadres of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to commemorate the 47th Anniversary of the uprising.
The event, themed 'Strengthening State Institutions: Lessons from the June 4, 1979 Uprising,' took place in Takoradi and featured activities such as a flag-raising, the lighting of a perpetual flame, and a wreath-laying ceremony. Mr Nelson remarked on the uprising's impact, noting it as a pivotal moment in Ghana's political history that reshaped governance, tested democratic aspirations, and challenged perceptions of leadership and accountability.
Mr Nelson stated that the uprising, driven by dissatisfaction with corruption and economic hardship, remains a defining chapter in Ghana's democratic journey. He emphasized that while accountability is essential, it must be pursued within the framework of the rule of law and democratic principles.
The Western Regional Minister affirmed the leaders' commitment to promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability in all development aspects. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with traditional authorities, civil society organizations, the private sector, development partners, and citizens to ensure effective management and utilization of public resources for the benefit of all.
Mr Nelson praised the Young Revolutionary Cadres of Takoradi for their dedication to organizing commemorative events, preserving and promoting the significance of the June 4 uprising in the nation's political history. He urged them to remain united, guided by probity and accountability principles, and work towards building a better Ghana for everyone.
Mr Fortune Agbodzah, Chairman of the 47th Anniversary Commemoration Committee, reiterated that the event serves as a reminder to Ghanaians that the nation's development goals can only be achieved through discipline, hard work, and selfless service by the citizenry.
