Accra: Chief of Staff at the Jubilee House, Dr Julius Debrah, has urged the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to ensure its research translates into jobs, businesses, and practical solutions that improve the lives of Ghanaians. Delivering a speech on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at the investiture of Professor Christian Agyare as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Dr. Debrah said universities must play a central role in driving Ghana's economic transformation through innovation and enterprise.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Debrah emphasized that while Ghana's economy was showing signs of recovery, the country's growth would only be meaningful if it created employment opportunities and improved livelihoods. He stated, "We cannot be satisfied with an economy that grows on paper while too many young people remain outside its opportunities. Our task is to convert growth into jobs, knowledge into enterprise and national progress into visible improvements in people's lives."
Dr. Debrah noted that KNUST was indispensable to achieving that goal, particularly through research and innovation that respond to national development needs. He stressed the importance of moving research from being an academic exercise to practical applications, explaining that discoveries in fields like pharmacy, engineering, agriculture, and digital technology should be developed into solutions capable of strengthening industries and enhancing the quality of life.
He further articulated that research reaches its highest purpose when it directly benefits society, creating opportunities for citizens and supporting national development. Dr. Debrah also called for stronger collaboration among universities, industry, and government to ensure that research addresses real-world challenges effectively.
In addition, he urged companies to support research, internships, and innovation while encouraging universities to remain responsive to the needs of industry without compromising academic independence. Dr. Debrah also appealed to KNUST's alumni to contribute as mentors, investors, and partners to help bridge the gap between academia and industry. He expressed confidence that KNUST could become a hub where innovation fuels enterprise, creates jobs, and advances Ghana's development.
