Accra: Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Setor Dumelo, has addressed persistent rumors regarding the financial advantages enjoyed by sitting MPs in Parliament. Dumelo, who transitioned from acting to politics, recently claimed on a social media platform that there is no substantial financial gain associated with being a Member of Parliament.
According to Ghana Web, Dumelo responded to inquiries on X by asserting that the popular belief about politicians amassing wealth through their parliamentary roles is misleading. He emphasized that individuals pursue political careers for various reasons, but financial enrichment should not be seen as a direct outcome of holding such positions.
Dumelo elaborated by acknowledging that while the position of an MP does not inherently offer financial benefits, it can be strategically leveraged for other advantages. "People have different reasons for wanting to go to Parliament. but money no dey inside like that. You can, however, use your position as an MP as leverage for certain things," he stated.
