Israeli Leaders Pledge Continued Military Action in Southern Lebanon

Jerusalem: Israeli leaders said on Monday that the Israel Defense Forces will continue to act to neutralize 'threats' in southern Lebanon, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to facilitate U.S.-Iran talks and de-escalate regional tensions.

According to Ghana News Agency, a joint statement was issued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and Chief of the General Staff Eyal Zamir. The statement emphasized that the military will continue to operate to neutralize 'threats against Israeli soldiers and citizens,' demolish militant infrastructure, and maintain the 'security zone' it established in southern Lebanon.

The statement was released as the United States and Iran concluded their first session of talks since the signing of a peace memorandum of understanding (MoU), held in Switzerland under the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar. Mediators announced 'encouraging' outcomes from the talks, including a 60-day roadmap toward a final deal and mechanisms to ensure the security of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

On Saturday, Netanyahu and Katz reportedly ordered the army to cease fire in Lebanon. However, Katz reiterated on Sunday that the army will not withdraw from the 'security zone' in southern Lebanon.
