Takoradi: The Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission has urged hunters and other wildlife users to stay away from all wild animals as the August to December closed season takes effect.
According to Ghana News Agency, the four-month hunting restriction is designed to allow wild animals to breed, reproduce, and replenish their populations, thereby promoting sustainable management of Ghana's wildlife resources. Mr. Paa Ekow Quansah, the Western, Central, and Western North Regional Manager of the Wildlife Division, emphasized the importance of obtaining valid licenses and permits for wildlife products before the commencement of the closed season. This applies to hunters, bushmeat traders, restaurant and chop bar operators, as well as operators of wildlife facilities.
Mr. Quansah warned that illegal hunting is a criminal offense, attracting penalties and fines. He expressed concern over the activities of poachers and urged the public to assist in halting the rapid decline of over-hunted wildlife species. Protecting the natural environment is crucial to supporting healthy forests, he added.
