Seasoned Ghanaian journalist and pollster, Benjamin Emmanuel Ephson has given the reason behind the victory of the newly elected General Secretary of the opposition NDC, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey in the party’s 10th National Congress.

The Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper said Mr. Fiavi Kwetey ran a legitimate campaign.

He said in an interview on Accra-based Joy Prime that the former Ketu South MP campaigned by telling people that there was a need to have a native of the Volta region, the party’s stronghold, in the executive committee.

The famed pollster intimated that the message was welcomed by the delegates, who, knowing the impact of Voltarians in the NDC, voted massively to give him a handsome victory.

“Part of Fifi’s campaign was legitimate that if he is not voted for, Volta Region which was the political world bank of the NDC was not going to have any person on the Executive Committee. That was a legitimate campaign strategy and he won handsomely,” Mr. Ephson said.

He explained, “The Volta and Northern Region are the political world banks of the NDC and the NPP’s strongholds Eastern and Ashanti Region. That aspect of appealing to delegates that yes I’ve been a three-term MP but elect me so that there will be a representation of the Volta region on the executive committee.”

Many saw the contest as a horse race between Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, the immediate past Deputy General Secretary and Elvis Afriyie Ankrah forgetting the former legislator who surprisingly won with 4,543 votes while Dr. Otokunor had 2,595 votes leaving Afriyie Ankrah with 1,408 votes.
