Accra, President of Groupe Ideal, Dr Nii Kotei Dzani, has presented 35 computers and accessories valued at about GH91,000.00 to the Department of Economics of the University of Cape Coast.
The computers were made up of 30 desktop computers and five laptops as well as printers and accessories.
Presenting the items, the Groupe President, who is also a member of the Council of State, said the donation was in fulfilment of a pledge made to the Department, where he studied to enable it enhance teaching and learning.
Dr Dzani said education was the surest way Ghana could accelerate the pace of economic and social development, adding that it was time the country invested more in the education of its citizenry to produce people who can appreciate the value of knowledge.
He said his company would collaborate with the Department of Economics to develop it into a School of Economics through logistics and resources support.
Dr Dzani said it is his belief that when the transformation was successful, the (School of Economics) would be an influence to the economic growth of the country and the sub-region through research.
He said the economic foundation of the country was weak and therefore urged them to work hard to become a reference point in the economic studies in and outside the country.
The Vice Chancellor of the UCC, Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah expressed the University’s appreciation to Groupe Ideal and thanked the President for his continuous support.
He said the donation came at the right time because the items were one of the dire needs of the Department.
He said he shared in the dream of the President to see the Department of Economics transformed into a school because the phenomenal growth from a small department to a big one.
He added that he would ensure that the school did their part in making the collaboration between them and Group Ideal a reality and to see the transformation of the Department.
He said a paper had already been presented to the Academic Board of the University to consider the transformation and expressed the hope that would be done soon.
Dr Nii Kotei Dzani also used the opportunity to interact with students of the Economics Department and encouraged them to live their dreams.
