Accra: The Friends of the Nation (FoN) has successfully demonstrated the potential of green climate solutions to enhance climate resilience, facilitate energy transition, and promote environmental justice in three districts of the Western Region. This initiative underscores the power of sustainable practices in fostering a more adaptive and equitable environment.
According to Ghana News Agency, the project has also empowered local governments and communities by building their capacity for gender-responsive climate change adaptation measures. Among the initiatives are the installation of polycarbonate roofing at Esiama Basic School, the construction of a fishpond fence in Ellembelle, and the development of a climate education resource guide at Shama.
Mr. Solomon Kusi Ampofo, the Programmes Coordinator at FoN, highlighted the benefits of installing polycarbonate sheets at Esiama Basic School in December 2025. He explained that the naturally lit environment and weatherproof technology offered by these sheets provide a durable and climate-smart alternative to the outdated aluminium roofing, reducing long-term maintenance needs and energy costs.
In Ellembelle, the fishpond wire mesh fencing project serves as a low-cost livelihood model, crucial for families relying on fish farming as their primary source of income and sustenance, particularly for women. Previously, seasonal flooding would obliterate fishpond walls, leading to substantial losses. However, the introduction of simple wire mesh fencing has significantly mitigated these losses, prompting farmers to independently transition to more durable rubber mesh.
Mr. William Augustine-Derkyi, the FON Project Officer, expressed hope that these initiatives would foster peer learning and showcase practical, gender-just, and climate-resilient green solutions, such as solar energy systems and climate-friendly sanitation facilities. These efforts aim to set a standard for sustainable development in the region.
