Greed and Get-Rich-Quick Syndrome Threaten Ghana’s Moral Fabric, Says Owusu

Accra: Mr. Francis Owusu, President of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (FGBMFI), has voiced serious concerns regarding the rising greed and unrestrained desire for quick wealth in Ghana, particularly among the youth. The phenomenon, he argues, is causing significant harm to both the moral structure of the nation and its natural environment.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Owusu, speaking at the opening of the Fellowship’s 2025 National Convention in Accra, highlighted that despite Ghana’s wealth in human and natural resources, the country faces persistent underdevelopment. This, he attributed to a decline in ethical standards and a relentless pursuit of wealth at any cost. He pointed out that Ghana, though blessed, is at a critical juncture 68 years after gaining independence, grappling with a moral crisis exacerbated by social media’s negative influences.

He further expressed concern about the rampant illegal mining, known locally as ‘galamsey’, which is increasingly damaging Ghana’s water bodies and farmlands in the quest for gold. Mr. Owusu emphasized the need for a shift in values, urging business leaders and professionals to prioritize integrity, stewardship, and faith.

The convention’s theme, ‘Pursuing the Greatest Business’, serves as a reminder to Christians that the ultimate mission is not profit but fulfilling Christ’s commission through righteousness and service. Mr. Emmanuel B. Mahama, National President of FGBMFI, described the event as a time for ‘spiritual renewal’, calling on members to engage in soul-winning and discipleship.

The 2025 National Convention, held from October 9 to 11, brought together delegates from across West Africa, including Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, and C´te d’Ivoire, alongside local business leaders and public servants. Since its inception in 1984, this annual gathering has been a pivotal event for Christian businessmen in Ghana. This year, it marked a significant milestone by including international participants and hosting a networking session to foster entrepreneurial connections and integrity in business.

Founded in 1951, FGBMFI is recognized as the world’s largest Christian business network, with operations in over 100 countries and more than 7,000 chapters globally.
