Accra: The Government has announced its intention to establish a One Billion Ghana Cedi Bawku Revitalisation Fund as part of its acceptance of the Otumfuo Mediation Report's findings and recommendations concerning the Bawku chieftaincy conflict.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications, emphasized that the prolonged conflict has led to significant human, social, and economic losses, severely impacting livelihoods, social cohesion, and development in Bawku and its surrounding areas. The persistent insecurity has hindered both public and private investments while delaying crucial infrastructural projects.
In response to these challenges, President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Minister for Finance to initiate the establishment of the revitalisation fund. The fund, set to be distributed over a three-year span from 2026 to 2028, aims to rebuild and enhance key infrastructure such as roads, healthcare, education, and irrigation facilities. These efforts are intended to restore Bawku's status as a major economic and trading center in Northern Ghana.
The management of the fund will be overseen by a high-level committee chaired by Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Minister for Finance and Acting Minister for Defence. Other committee members include Mr. Donaltus Akamuguri, the Upper East Regional Minister, and Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, who will represent the area's MPs.
The Government has also called for nationwide support and reconciliation, urging traditional authorities, political leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, and the general public to back the peace-building and reconciliation initiatives in a spirit of unity and patriotism. The administration reiterated Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's message that there are no victors or losers in this process.
President Mahama has encouraged all parties to accept and adhere to the Mediation Report's conclusions and recommendations to ensure peace and stability. The Government expressed its appreciation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu, The Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahama Sheriga II, the Bawku Naba, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and all individuals and institutions whose efforts contributed to the success of the mediation process.
