Kpone katamanso: The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kpone Katamanso, Samuel TK Morton, has announced that the government will construct new regional landfill sites throughout the Greater Accra Region. This development is part of a broader strategy to decommission landfill sites that have surpassed their capacity.
According to Ghana Web, the initiative is a component of a 50-year waste management development project, led by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim. The project committee is finalizing technical drawings, which will be submitted to Cabinet for approval prior to implementation.
Morton stated that lands have been secured at Ayikuma, Sege, and Paanor to serve as new landfill sites for the Greater Accra Region. He elaborated on the plan by explaining that the region will be divided into three waste management zones, with each location designated to receive waste from specific areas.
Once operational, waste tricycle operators currently using the Kpone landfill site will transport waste to the Ayikuma facility. Morton emphasized that the Kpone landfill has outlived its usefulness and will be decommissioned and repurposed for waste-to-energy generation.
Morton also voiced concerns over the rising issue of indiscriminate dumping by some waste tricycle operators, noting it as a financial burden on the assembly. Surveillance teams have been deployed to monitor illegal dumping, and operators caught breaking the law will face prosecution.
