Government Plans Modernization of Aboabo Market in Tamale

Tamale:The government has unveiled plans to redevelop the Aboabo Market in Tamale into a modern facility aimed at boosting trading activities in the region. The initiative, announced by Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, seeks to enhance the existing market infrastructure to better accommodate traders and improve commercial operations without displacing current vendors.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ayariga shared these plans during a meeting with leaders of the Aboabo Market. The visit was part of his efforts to evaluate the market's current condition, assess available space, and discuss the government's intentions with market managers.

The market has seen little development since some stalls were left incomplete during the Acheampong era. Mr. Ayariga emphasized that the redevelopment is in line with President John Mahama's commitment to the local community. The government aims to create jobs and support a 24-hour economy by providing a well-designed marketplace where traders can operate in a more conducive environment.

Mr. Ayariga reassured market leaders that the government's plans are not to remove existing traders but to enhance the facilities for better accommodation and trading conditions. He highlighted the importance of collaborating with market managers to ensure that redevelopment efforts meet the needs of traders and stakeholders.

In addition to the Aboabo Market, Mr. Ayariga also visited the Tamale Central Market to assess its current status.
