Accra: The Government of Ghana has started engaging with chiefs and leaders from Zongo communities nationwide to discuss redevelopment plans aimed at enhancing living conditions within these areas. The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs is spearheading this initiative, focusing initially on communities in the Greater Accra Region, including Nima and Mamobi.
According to Ghana Web, Mahama Ayariga, the sector minister, emphasized during the Zongo Chiefs Conference on September 10, 2026, that the redevelopment programme is designed to improve the lives of residents without causing displacement. The minister outlined the government's intention to enhance infrastructure and economic opportunities while allowing residents to remain in their communities.
Ayariga further stated that the redevelopment efforts aim to directly benefit Zongo residents through improved infrastructure and economic opportunities. He highlighted the importance of engaging with local youth, assembly officials, and other stakeholders to address community challenges, especially after his recent visit to Mamobi.
The minister praised Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson's commitment to supporting the transformation of Nima and Mamobi. Ayariga assured that the government would collaborate closely with chiefs, religious and youth leaders, and other stakeholders to tackle issues related to youth development, women's empowerment, and infrastructure improvements, ensuring that community members benefit rather than face displacement.
Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, also addressed the socio-economic challenges facing young people in Zongo communities, pointing to unemployment, poverty, and exclusion as contributing factors to crime and violence. He urged authorities to focus on creating opportunities for youth through skills training, entrepreneurship, and employment partnerships with the private sector, emphasizing the need for investment in the youth's future to prevent hopelessness.
