Accra: Goodlife School of Counselling and Psychology recently celebrated its third graduation ceremony, underscoring the critical role of trained counsellors in societal development. Professor Nyuiemedi Agordzo Edoh-Torgah, Head of the Department of Counselling Psychology at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), highlighted the growing importance of competent counsellors in promoting mental health and supporting national progress.
According to Ghana News Agency, Prof Edoh-Torgah emphasized that in a world burdened by stress, heavy workloads, and uncertainties, effective counselling strategies are crucial for empowering individuals and communities to make informed decisions. These decisions contribute to their overall development and well-being. She delivered these remarks during the ceremony, which took place under the theme 'Building Competent Counsellors for Positive Impact and Social Transformation.'
Prof Edoh-Torgah pointed out the essential role of lay counsellors in various settings, including churches, schools, and hospitals. They are vital in shaping the emotions and thoughts of individuals facing distress or seeking direction. Additionally, lay counsellors hold the responsibility of referring clients for further specialized care when necessary.
