Ghanaians Reveal Why Victims Stay in Abusive Relationships

Rabat:Ghanaians have shared insights into the complex reasons why victims remain in abusive relationships. Key factors include love, financial dependence, children, and the desire to maintain one's reputation.

According to Ghana Web, in a vox pop on domestic abuse, respondents expressed that the intensity of unhealthy love, particularly when a partner is attractive or financially stable, can keep victims attached to toxic relationships. One person noted that some individuals, especially women, may remain in abusive situations because they are enamored with their partner's appearance or financial status, despite the abuse.

Another participant challenged the notion that abuse is linked to love, asserting that true affection should not cause harm. They described staying in abusive relationships as an act of foolishness rather than love, emphasizing that genuine care does not involve inflicting pain.

Financial concerns, children, and shared experiences were also cited as reasons for staying in abusive relationships. Some individuals feel they have sacrificed too much to leave, while others fear the repercussions on their children or lifestyle. Protecting one's public image was highlighted as a significant factor, particularly for public figures who may choose silence to safeguard their reputation and brand.

Respondents emphasized that enduring abuse is never justified by love, money, or reputation. They urged victims to seek help from trusted individuals, counselors, family members, or institutions like the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU). The discussion also highlighted that abuse extends beyond physical violence to include emotional, verbal, and psychological harm.
